West Indies stalwart Shivnarine Chanderpaul has equalled the record of seven consecutive Test innings half-centuries.
Chanderpaul scored a patient 104 against South Africa in the first Test match in Port Elizabeth today to match the record set by fellow West Indian Everton Weekes and Zimbabwe's Andy Flower.
The 33-year-old's superb knock helped his side to a first innings total of 408 all out, and the West Indies then took complete control of the match as they restricted South Africa to 122/5.
"When you get an opportunity to get in, you want to make a big score," said Chanderpaul. "That's something I've been working on for the past couple of years."
Chanderpaul started his run back in December 2006 against Pakistan in Karachi. He then had a brilliant tour of England where he scored 74, 50, 116 not out, 136 not out and 70, in the four match Test series.
West Indies have a difficult time in international cricket over the last few years. But Chanderpaul believes his team could be set for an up-turn in fortunes under new leader Chris Gayle.
"It's the sort of guy Chris is. He's nice and relaxed and just chirping people up. Helping the young players and being the person he is, it's good for the team," said Chanderpaul.
