Mr Mugabe's party has won the first re-count
A state-run newspaper in Zimbabwe has suggested a unity government led by president Robert Mugabe to help resolve the current election crisis in the country.

The editorial also called for members of the opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), to be included within the government.

The online version of the editorial, from the national Herald newspaper, was published earlier today.

The paper said that it was "literally impossible" for a free and fair presidential run-off to be held between MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai and Mr Mugabe.

"The current socioeconomic environment in Zimbabwe is not conducive, and the country's political dynamics so distorted, that holding a free and fair election run-off in the immediate term is literally impossible," the Herald said.

Mr Tsvangirai and his party claim to have won last month's presidential election, however, no official results have yet been published and Mr Mugabe appears unwilling to relinquish power.

Zimbabwe's electoral commission said today that Mr Mugabe's Zanu-PF party has won the first of the 23 constituencies currently subject to vote recounting.

The ruling party has managed to retain its parliamentary seat in Goromonzi West.End of story
