Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin has attacked Democratic presidential candidate Senator Obama for allegedly having links to terrorists.
In speeches in Colorado and California, the Alaska governor adopted a more aggressive line against Senator Obama by claiming he had links to the Weather Underground organisation that was against the Vietnam war and which is suspected of being behind bombings in US cities.
Ms Palin said: "Our opponent though is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough that he is palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."
At an earlier rally she stated that the time had come to "take the gloves off", indicating that the Republicans were looking to raise further questions about their rival's ability to lead the country as well as his character.
The Democratic nominee's campaign responded by criticising its rivals for playing "gutter politics".
Obama spokesman Hari Sevugan said: "Today, the McCain-Palin team took their discredited, dishonorable campaign one desperate step further, announcing that they were going to try 'turning a page on this financial crisis' and launching more personal attacks on Senator Obama.
"Instead of offering solutions for working Americans and families struggling through a failing economy, they have offered more gutter politics and false attacks," he added.
Americans are set to go to the polls to pick their team of president and vice-president in just under a month on 4th November.
