Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is to endorse the campaign of his Republican rival John McCain, it has been reported.

The former Massachusetts governor dropped out of the race for the Republican nomination last week after Arizona senator Mr McCain built a seemingly unassailable lead.

And according to the Associated Press news agency, Republican party sources indicate that Mr Romney will release his 288 delegates and ask them to support Mr McCain.

Senator McCain, a Vietnam veteran, is the Republican frontrunner with 821 delegates from victories in 15 states, though former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee remains in the race despite having only 241 delegates.

In the Democratic race for the White House, former first lady Hillary Clinton has focused on economic policy as she bids to recover ground lost following rival Barack Obama's recent primary victories.

Illinois senator Mr Obama has won eight consecutive polls since Super Tuesday on February 5th and now leads Ms Clinton for the Democratic nomination, with 1,275 delegates to her 1,220.

However she is still leading Mr Obama in Ohio ahead of a crucial ballot on March 4th.

Speaking at a General Motors plant in Lordstown, Ohio, the New York senator appealed to the middle classes by pledging to introduce restrictions on oil, insurance, student loan, credit card, and Wall Street investment companies.

"For seven long years, we've had a government of, by, and for the special interests, and we've had enough," she said.

"It's time to level the playing field against the special interests and deliver 21st century solutions to rebuild the middle-class."

Some 2,025 delegates are required to secure the Democratic nomination.
