Tottenham Hotspur remain in relegation trouble after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Everton at White Hart Lane.

Despite being second-best for much of the game, a second-half goal from Stephen Pienaar sealed victory for the Toffees.

The result moves David Moyes' men into seventh place while Spurs are above the drop zone on goal difference.

The first-half was a dire affair with Spurs edging it with Tom Huddlestone blazing over from distance while Aaron Lennon failed to find the target from the edge of the box.

Everton were dealt an early blow when Yakubu limped off and was replaced by Louis Saha. And the ex-Manchester United striker came agonizingly close to breaking the deadlock when his header was saved by Heurelho Gomes.

And the Brazilian shot-keeper was called into action again on the stroke of half-time after keeping out two shots from Marouane Felliani.

Spurs continued to carve out the better chances in the second period with Benoit Assou-Ekotto hammering a 25-yard effort inches over.

But the visitors grabbed the lead on 51 minutes when Pienaar's left-foot shot struck Vedran Corluka and rolled into the net.

Harry Redknapp's men continued to dominate with Roman Palyuchenko blazing over from 12 yards, before the Russian was denied from close range by a stunning save from Tim Howard at his near post.

Everton came agonizingly close to sealing their straight win at Spurs when Victor Anichebe was played through on goal but the Nigerian fired his effort wide, but they still held on to halt Spurs' revival under Redknapp.
