For absolutely no reason at all, a fourth instalment in the Scream series of horror movies has got a greenlight.
Hollywood giant the Weinstein Company has confirmed that another slice of the scary-masked slasher franchise is on the way, nearly eight years after the third Scream movie.
A post on the Weinstein Company's official blog revealed that a new movie is in the early stages of development.
"The Scream franchise has become a cult classic," it read. Together, all three movies have grossed over $300 million (£125 million) at the box office, in the United States alone.
"The fans have been asking for a fourth Scream movie for years and we're finally giving it to them."
The post added: "As far as details go, we're only in the planning stages and we may not get around to it [Scream 4] for quite some time, but rest assured, it will happen."
However, it's unclear as yet whether the new movie will feature the same talented cast, clever irony and post-modern horror of the first two movies, or a script as inspired and mundane as the third.
A post-script to the blog doesn't exactly raise hopes either, with the revelation that the movie has been greenlit without a script or any cast attached.
When eventually released, Scream 4 is to be distributed by Dimension Films and Metro Goldwyn-Mayer.
