Big-hitting American Phil Mickelson is a doubt for the US Open later this month after injuring his wrist at the Memorial Tournament.

The 36-year-old world number two withdrew from the Ohio competition after just 11 holes of his first round because his left wrist was causing him discomfort.

And while Mickelson declared that the problem "isn't anything serious", it means his preparation for the major, which takes place at the Oakmont country club between June 14th and 18th.

"I don't think I've ever withdrawn for an injury. This is a new experience," Mickelson said.

"I guess I'm getting older. I'm turning 37 here soon (June 16th), and I guess this is part of the deal."

Explaining the injury, the San Diego-born player said he "jarred [the wrist] pretty good" while playing a chip-shot on his approach to the 11th green.

"It just got worse [after that]," he recounted. "I couldn't grab the club, and I couldn't swing."

Mickelson said he hoped to play next week despite the injury as he has already declared himself for the Stanford St Jude Championship in Tennessee.

"I was really looking forward to playing here [in Ohio]. I love this golf course, the field is great, and I was looking forward to playing well."

He added: "I'll take a few days off and see if I can get ready and may get some competition in Memphis."
