Gore: No presidential bid

Al Gore rules out standing for 2008 US presidential elections
Nobel peace prize laureate Al Gore has poured water on reports he will run for the United States presidency again.

There has been increased speculation that Mr Gore, who lost out to presidential incumbent George Bush seven years ago, would join the White House race following his Nobel prize victory last week.

But he told Norwegian broadcaster NRK: "I don't have plans to be a candidate again so I don't really see it in that context at all."

The 59-year-old was jointly awarded the prize with the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for their work on raising awareness of global warming.

Mr Gore had previously won an Oscar for his documentary An Inconvenient Truth, which brought climate change to the forefront of people's minds and is to be shown in UK schools.

He said it was a "great honour" to share the award with the IPCC but insisted he was focusing his efforts on combating climate change and not Washington.

"I'm involved in a different kind of campaign, it's a global campaign," he continued.

"It's a campaign to change the way people think about the climate crisis."

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards are among those bidding to become the Democrats' candidate for the White House next year.End of story
