Suspected Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has arrived in Germany to face charges of being an accessory to the murder of thousands of people during the second world war.
The 89-year-old, who is said to be in poor health, was deported from the US and arrived at Munich airport this morning.
Prosecutors have accused Mr Demjanjuk of being an accessory to the deaths of 29,000 Jews. He has denied that charges, however, and rejects the claims he worked as a guard in the Sobibor Nazi death camp.
In his defence, instead he claims he was captured by the Germans in Ukraine and kept as a prisoner of war throughout the war.
Mr Demjanjuk first arrived in the US in 1952 as a refugee and settled in Ohio.
He was later sentenced to death in Israel in 1952 for crimes against humanity but the sentence was later overturned.
He then returned to the US and in March this year authorities in Germany issued a warrant for his arrest.
After his arrival this morning, the 89-year-old is expected to be taken to Munch's Stadelheim prison where his medical condition will be assessed and he will be formally arrested.
