The women had cocaine with a street value of £840,000 when they were arrested
Two women have been arrested at Manchester airport carrying cocaine worth £840,000, it has emerged today.

The women, who have not been named, were stopped with 14 kilos of the class A drug in their baggage earlier this week.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) officers arrested the women and they both appeared at Manchester magistrates court charged with the illegal importation of class A drugs this morning.

The women, a 29-year old from Sierra Leone and a 32-year old from Nigeria, both live in London.

They had arrived in Manchester on a flight from Istanbul, Turkey, shortly before their arrest.

"HMRC are determined to protect the public from the dangers of class A drugs and the associated social ills that they cause," HMRC's head of detection for the north-west, Linda Paul, said.

"Regardless of the entry point used at the UK border our teams are ever vigilant to stop this evil trade. Class A drugs can devastate communities."

The arrests come as two British teenagers continue to be held in Ghana over suspected drug smuggling.

Sixteen-year-olds Yasemin Vatansever and Yatunde Diya were arrested at Accra airport with £300,000 worth of drugs on them earlier this month.

They have claimed their innocence but could be jailed for ten years if they are found guilty of drug smuggling.End of story
