Trinidad and Tobago are forced to return home without scoring after a 2-0 loss to Paraguay.
The Caribbean side could have progressed with a win if Sweden had been beaten by England but neither side of the equation was met.
And the islanders were unlucky not to have scored after a spirited fight back which saw wave after wave of attacks.
Centre back Brent Sancho was unfortunate to give Paraguay the lead after a deflection and becomes the only Trinidad and Tobago player to have scored a goal at the World Cup, albeit an own goal.
Denis Caniza thought he had doubled Paraguay's lead but his effort was ruled out for offside. It seemed as though the game had been kept alive but Leo Beenhakker's men were unable to take advantage of their reprieve.
Paraguay eventually got a second goal through their one world class player, Roque Santa Cruz, who set up Nelson Cuevas to make it 2-0.
Santa Cruz said: "There is nothing we can do about what happened here in Germany. We were able to win just one game, but we now have to look to the future, work hard and change everything that has to be changed.
"I am glad we had this small joy today. But this was not enough. We have to work to clean Paraguay's image and the best chance to do that in the Copa America."
