Hamas ready to accept Israel: Jimmy Carter

Monday, 21 Apr 2008 12:05
Former US president Jimmy Carter spoke in Jerusalem today
Former US president Jimmy Carter has said that Hamas is ready to accept the right of Israel to "live as a neighbour next door in peace".

Mr Carter made the comments during a speech in Jerusalem today, after meeting with Hamas leaders in Syria last week.

The former president also declared that Hamas would not undermine Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas' efforts to negotiate a peace deal with Israel, as long as it was backed by the Palestinian people in a referendum.

Mr Carter said that the fact the US and Israel wouldn't meet with Hamas was holding back the prospect of a peace agreement.

He claimed that the chance of any type of peace deal being made had "regressed" since Middle East talks in November at Annapolis.

"The problem is not that I met with Hamas in Syria. The problem is that Israel and the US refuse to meet with someone who must be involved," he said during his speech today.

The Israeli army earlier launched an investigation into the death of a Reuters cameraman in Gaza Strip last week.

Fadel Shana was among a number of civilians killed in an Israeli strike.End of story
