David Beckham says he is optimistic that he will be a part of Fabio Capello's England plans.
The former national captain is just one cap away from his 100th for his country but the arrival of the Italian as a replacement for the sacked Steve McClaren has shrouded his future in uncertainty.
Beckham was famously axed by Capello during his time at Real Madrid and although he forced his way back into the team at the end of last season, the LA Galaxy star admits their relationship has not always been smooth.
"I've played under Fabio Capello before and he's one of the best managers I've played under," the 32-year-old told a forthcoming BBC radio programme.
"There were a lot of things that happened at the time in that last year for me at Real Madrid but for me Fabio Capello is one of the managers players look up to and want him to manage them.
"I'm hoping I'll be part of his [England] plans."
Capello takes over an England team at an exceptionally low ebb, having failed to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since 1994 when they missed out on Euro 2008.
But the former AC Milan coach is expected to shake up the current squad when he officially begins his tenure next month, with the captaincy one of the key issues he will be deciding upon.
John Terry's future as skipper is uncertain, while former captain Beckham is unlikely to be heavily involved after England's friendly with Switzerland on February 6th.
Beckham, however, maintains that the players will be behind the new man in charge and will be hopeful that he can restore past glories to the national side.
"I think its a great appointment," the midfielder said of the FA's decision to go with the Italian.
"I think he will be great for the players and the England team. Everyone wants someone leading you that has the respect and has had the success and he definitely has had that in his career."
The full interview with the England star will be broadcast on David Beckham's Line of Enquiry at 15:05 GMT on Radio 2 tomorrow.
