American Nick Watney leads the season-opening PGA Tour event, the Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hawaii, after carding a first-round 68.
His six-birdie, five-under-par score means he leads Sweden's Daniel Chopra by one shot after the first day's play.
Three players - American Jonathan Byrd, Australia's Aaron Baddeley and US Open champion Angel Cabrera are all tied for third after three-under-par rounds of 70.
A number of other big-name stars are well placed, with South Africa's Rory Sabbatini in a group of three players who are four shots off the lead.
Americans Justin Leonard, Steve Stricker and Hunter Mahan are all even-par after the first round at the Plantation course in Kapalua, Maui, although several other of the fancied golfers in the field failed to break par.
The pre-tournament favourite, Fiji's Vijay Singh, carded a one-over-par 74 on day one and is joined in a five-man group by world number three Jim Furyk.
Chad Campbell and Mark Calcavecchia finished with disappointing two-over-par rounds in the changeable conditions and KJ Choi and Boo Weekley both also had days to forget with rounds of six and seven over par, respectively.
