Argentina's Daniel Vancsik carded a second round 66 to claim a two-shot lead in the Portugal Masters at the Victoria Clube de Golfe in Vilamoura.

Vancsik started the round in tenth position, but a fabulous round in which he hit seven birdies saw him finish on 14 under-par. Englishmen Steve Webster and Ross Fisher, Sweden's Martin Erlandsson, and Spaniard Alvaro Quiros lead the chasing pack on 12 under-par.

The 30-year-old Vancsik has been in good form this season, winning the Madeira Island Open in March and finishing third at the Madrid Open last week.

"This course is good for my game. The driver is my best club and I can fly all the bunkers," said Vancsik, who led the Madrid Open until he suffered quintuple-bogey nine on the fifth hole of the final round.

Martin Kaymer of Germany, who led the tournament after breaking the course record with his first round 61, fell away badly with his second round 72, but is still in contention on 11 under-par.

England's Lee Westwood is well placed after he birdied the last two holes of his round to finish on ten under-par. But Westwood's compatriot Justin Rose had a far tougher round and is on five under-par.

Northern Ireland teenager Rory McIlroy played exceptionally to finish the day on four under-par and make the cut for the fourth time in the four tournaments he has played as a professional. But British trio David Howell, Darren Clarke and Paul McGinley all failed to progress.
