Hollywood campaigner Mia Farrow has ended a 12-day hunger strike over the plight of people in Darfur on doctor's orders.

The 64-year-old was told by her doctor that he blood sugar levels were so low that she would begin to experience seizures.

In a video posted on her website, Farrow said she welcomed Virgin tycoon Sir Richard Branson's decision to take up her fasting mantle.

"I'm honoured to be taking over the fast for the next three days," he said in a statement.

"We cannot stand and watch as one million people suffer.

"We all need to stand up and demand that international aid is restored and that the people of Darfur are protected and given the chance to live in peace."

Farrow began her fast, during which she only drank water, over Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir's expulsion of 13 aid agencies when the international criminal court issued an arrest warrant over his alleged actions in Darfur.

More than 300,000 people are thought to have died and 2.7 million displaced since a counterinsurgency was launched in 2003 in the Darfur region of Sudan.
