Owais Shah has claimed England still have the momentum to go on an win the one-day series against New Zealand, despite Saturday's defeat.

The in-form middle-order batsman, who made 20, was his side's second top-scorer behind opener Phil Mustard (31) before he became the third man to be run out in the tourists' paltry innings of 130 all out.

But despite the setback in Wellington - the first of five one-day games on the tour – Shah believes England still have some momentum from their dominant Twenty20 displays last week that earned them back-to-back victories.

"We know it was a poor performance by our team [on Saturday], but it was just one game," Shah explained.

"We know we didn't play well but after the way we played in the two Twenty20 matches we believe we still have the momentum.

"We believe we just had one bad day at the office and hopefully we can put that right here - we have to make sure we don't go 2-0 down."

Shah also compared the defeat in the opening match to the start the team had to the one-day series in Sri Lanka last year.

He admitted the team took "a hammering" in the first game before bouncing back to seal the series 3-2.

"It's similar to where we were in Sri Lanka when we adapted to the conditions after the first game," he continued.

"We came back strongly then and went on to win the series and it's still early days in this one.

"We all believe we can still win games out here and try and win the series."
