A brawl at the final whistle took the shine off Valencia's away goals victory over Serie A leaders Inter Milan after a goalless draw in Spain saw them through.
Violent scenes at the end of the game, which saw players and staff from both sides embroiled in clashes as the game ended, could yet see both clubs punished for improper conduct.
Valencia's Carlos Marchena kicked out at Inter's Nicolas Burdisso, sparking the trouble.
Tempers flared after the Italian side had been left to rue a series of missed chances throughout the game which, coupled with some superb defending from Valencia's centre-back pairing of Roberto Ayala and Raul Albiol, ended Inter's interest in European competition this season.
A 2-2 draw in the San Siro was enough for the Spanish side as they held firm at home.
In the evening's other Champions League match, Roma secured their progress at the expense of the French champions Lyon with a 2-0 win at the Stade Gerland.
Lyon, many people's dark horses for this year's competition, were stunned when captain Francesco Totti nodded home Max Tonetto's cross midway through the first half.
Then on the stroke of half time Alessandro Mancini scored a sensational solo goal to all but end the tie.
Despite second-half pressure from Gerard Houllier's side, they were unable to fight their way back into the game and consequently bow out at the last 16 stage.
