A British pensioner has been found stabbed to death in her Spanish home, according to reports.
Janette May Grocutt, 74, who is originally from Cornwall, was apparently murdered while her husband, who is confined to bed, helplessly listened to her screams from upstairs.
The death occurred near the Costa Blanca resort of Alicante, in the village of Paredon, in the south-east of the country.
Douglas Grocutt is believed to have been in bed during the attack but been unable to help his wife.
Police are said to be working on the assumption that Mrs Grocutt, who ran a campsite with her husband after moving to Spain, disturbed a burglary.
Fears among expatriates living in the country have been high in recent months amid reports of an increase in criminal gangs targeting British nationals.
A neighbour called Paul was quoted by the Telegraph as saying he had discovered Mrs Grocutt's body.
"I found the body but I've been told by police not to say anything," he said.
"Everything points to it being a burglary. I am totally devastated. We are a very small, close-knit community and we are all stunned by this."
The British Foreign Office confirmed Mrs Grocutt's death but was unable to provide any specific details in relation to the case.
