Fernando Torres has been ruled out for "ten to 15 days" by Liverpool's medical staff after scans showed the striker has suffered a torn right hamstring.
The 24-year-old was injured after just 16 minutes of Spain's World Cup qualifier in Belgium on Wednesday.
And after a scan upon Torres' return to Melwood, it was revealed he is likely to miss the next two weeks of the season.
"A scan on Fernando Torres has shown a tear in his right hamstring which will sideline the player for between ten and 15 days," Liverpool spokesman Ian Cotton told the club's official website.
The injury could not have come at a worse time for the Reds, who face two crucial games next week.
First, they travel to Torres' old club Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night for an important Champions League fixture before what could be one of the defining games of Liverpool's Premier League season - against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
Meanwhile Rafael Benitez's plans were dealt a further blow with the news that Dutch international Ryan Babel is a "major doubt" for tomorrow's home game against Wigan Athletic.
The winger sprained his left ankle on international duty against Norway.
