World number one Tiger Woods is well in contention near the top of the leaderboard after the opening two rounds of the US Open.

Woods, who has come into the tournament nursing a knee problem following surgery in April, carded a superb three-under-par 68 to go to two under for the tournament.

The American sits just one shot behind the leader, Australia's Stuart Appleby, after he had a solid one-under-par round of 70 on the second day.

Rocco Mediate and Robert Karlsson join Woods on two under, with England's Lee Westwood, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez and American pair Davis Love III and DJ Trahan all on one under par.

Jimenez enjoyed the round of the day with a superb five-under-par 66 to charge up the leaderboard.

But it was Woods' round that grabbed the headlines as he recovered from a slow start to charge through the field in his final nine holes of the day.

Starting at the tenth, the 13-time major champion bogeyed two of his first three holes before returning to type with an excellent eagle-three on the 13th.

However, two more bogeys on the 16th and 17th holes looked to have put him too far adrift to have any say at the top of the standings.

Woods, though, was not to be denied - birdying four of his first five holes on his back nine before picking up a final shot on the ninth.
