World number two Roger Federer has been knocked out of the Monte Carlo Masters after losing in straight sets to fellow Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka.
The second seed crashed out in the third round 6-4 7-5 - only his second match on a clay court this season - after a below-par performance.
Wawrinka has met Federer only twice before on hard courts in 2005 and 2006, losing twice, but this time he proved to be on his mettle against his Davis Cup partner.
In the first set, Wawrinka - seeded 13th in Monte Carlo took advantage of one of his six break points to take the set 6-4.
Then in the second set, after exchanging earlier breaks of serve, Wawrinka sealed the final crucial break in the 11th game for a 6-5 lead before serving out for a famous victory.
In the day's other big-name contest, Spain's Fernando Verdasco, the seventh seed, secured a resounding victory over countryman David Ferrer, the tenth seed, 6-2 6-1.
