The Rolling Stones have begun their European tour with a show in front of 33,000 fans in Werchter, Belgium.

The legendary rockers played a typically energetic set at Werchter Park, kicking off the gig with fan favourite Start Me Up.

Such was the attention their presence caused a 30-mile traffic queue developed in the area, made worse by a nearby accident.

The show went down well with the Belgian press, with the newspaper De Morgen labelling it a "triumph".

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ron Wood will now head to the Netherlands on Friday for a show at Goffertpark before playing their first Isle of Wight Festival on June 10th.

The band will then tour France, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Romania, Hungary and Scandinavia before finishing the tour with a show at Slane Castle in Dublin and three gigs at the O2 Arena in London on August 21st, 23rd and 26th.

The band's last tour became the highest-earning musical jaunt in history, grossing more than £50 million.

The Stones' show in Belgrade, due to take place on July 14th, was at the centre of attention earlier this year when it was feared horses located close to the arena would be scared by the noise.

But there will be no incidence of wild horses this time around, as organisers decided to move the sell-out show.
