Robinho, Britain's most expensive footballer, has been arrested and bailed over allegations of serious sexual assault at a Leeds nightclub.
The Manchester City forward's spokesman said the Brazilian strongly denies any wrongdoing.
Police sources told inthenews.co.uk that Robinho had been arrested yesterday in connection with an unspecified sexual assault and bailed pending further inquiries.
In a statement released late on Tuesday, Robinho's spokesman Chris Nathaniel said: "We can confirm that Robinho met the police today, as pre-arranged and as part of a criminal investigation.
"He strenuously denies any allegation of wrongdoing or criminality and is happy to cooperate with the police if required further."
Robinho has scored 12 goals since his £32.5 million transfer from Real Madrid last summer, although his relationship with the club is said to be under strain after he left their training camp for Brazil without permission.
City boss Mark Hughes has confirmed that the striker will face disciplinary action and a fine as a result.
