British number one Andy Murray came through a testing first-round tie at the Moselle Open in Metz, beating Janko Tipsarevic in three sets.
Murray, seeded third at the French indoor tournament, overcame a second-set slump, bouncing back to win 6-4 1-6 6-2.
The Briton controlled the opening exchanges and always looked dangerous against his Serbian opponent, who had won the only previous encounter between the two men at Queen's Club in 2006.
Murray broke Tipsarevic to earn the first set but a lapse in concentration in the second handed the world number 53 a simple enough route back into the match with a 6-1 rout.
However the young Scot regained his composure with a solid final set to go through into the second round.
There Murray faces the winner of the first-round match between Frenchman Michael Llodra and Austria's Werner Eschauer with the winner of that tie progressing to the last eight.
This week's tournament is one of several on Murray's schedule which includes competitions in Moscow, Madrid, St Petersburg and Paris in the remainder of this year as he looks to make up for the time he lost to injury earlier this season.
He was forced to miss around three months of the ATP Tour with a wrist injury, which forced him out of the grand slams at Wimbledon and Roland Garros.
