Andy Roddick has been drawn in the Red Group alongside world number one Roger Federer for the season-ending Masters Cup in Shanghai this week.
The American, seeded fifth, has an unenviable record against the Swiss star - having lost the last ten matches played between the two and only one win in their 15 total meetings.
Federer knocked Roddick out of the 2003 Masters Cup in the semi-finals and also beat him in last year's tournament during the round robin stages.
Troubled Russian player Nikolay Davydenko and number seven seed Fernando Gonzalez of Spain are also placed in the Red Group.
The other side of the draw, the Gold Group, is headed by Spanish number two seed Rafael Nadal and Serbian number three seed Novak Djokovic, who look set to continue their burgeoning rivalry.
The two players have met six times already this year. Nadal holds a 4-2 head-to-head advantage but Djokovic won the last match between the two - a straight-sets victory at the Canadian Masters in Montreal back in May.
Nadal faces eighth seed Richard Gasquet of France in the opening match of the Masters Cup on Sunday, and David Ferrer - the third Spaniard to qualify for the competition - completes the group.
