Francisco Javier Lopez Pena was arrested in Bordeaux
Spanish and French police have arrested the reported leader of Basque separatist group Eta.

Francisco Javier Lopez Pena and three other alleged Eta members were detained by officers in the French city of Bordeaux last night, Spain's interior minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba confirmed.

Two other people, one in Spain and one in France, were arrested today

"This is not just another police operation in the sense that one of the detained, Francisco Javier Lopez Pena, is in all likelihood at this moment the person with most political and military weight in the terrorist group Eta," Mr Rubalcaba told reporters in Senegal during an official visit.

Eta is blamed for exploding a huge car bomb in the town northern Spanish town of Gexto earlier this week which killed a local policeman.

"This is a big blow to the Eta terrorists," Jose Blanco, secretary of Spain's Socialist party, said today.

"And it's going to bring us more joy, when you catch such important leaders, you can find out a lot of information, contacts, which you can use to stamp out terrorism," Mr Blanco added.

Since a ceasefire was declared in December 2006, Spanish and French police have arrested dozens of alleged members of the separatist group.End of story
