Top seed Andy Murray has beaten world number 53 Victor Troicki in straight sets to successfully begin the defence of his St Petersburg Open title.
The Scot came through 6-3 6-3 in a little over one hour against the Serb to set up a second-round clash with Ernests Gulbis of Latvia.
Fresh from his Madrid Masters triumph last week, Murray continued the excellent run of form which has seen him win two of his last three ATP Tour events, and reach a first grand slam final at the US Open.
Up to a career-high fourth in the world rankings, Murray eased through the first set with two service breaks in his first ever match against Troicki.
A sluggish start to the second set saw the Briton forced into saving a break point early on his own serve.
But after successfully negotiating that minor scare he bounced back with a break of his own to seal a comfortable win.
