Lewis Hamilton has emerged unscathed after a major crash during practice for the Bahrain grand prix.
The 23-year-old veered off the track and into a barrier during the second session ahead of Sunday's race.
Hamilton walked out of the car and was taken to a medical centre by motorcycle where he was declared free of injury.
The crash capped off a disappointing day for the Briton, who clocked the fourth fastest lap times in both practice sessions.
Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikkonen gave Ferrari a one-two in the standings by going round in one minute, 31.420 seconds and one minute, 32.327 seconds respectively.
Hamilton, who crashed during qualifying for the European grand prix at the Nurburging last year, said afterwards that "sometimes these things happen".
"I am absolutely fine, and hopefully the damage to the car is not too bad," the McLaren driver explained.
"We would have had to change our engine and gearbox anyway so hopefully I am not going to be too unpopular with the boys in the garage. In the first session we stayed on the same set of tyres throughout."
Massa meanwhile is looking to register his first points of the season so far this weekend.
"I like the track, I always go very well here," the Brazilian said.
"Hopefully I can say the same thing on Sunday. I think, considering that I still have zero points, a podium will definitely be a good result."
