Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal breezed into the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, both overwhelming their opponents in straight sets wins.

The Swiss moved a step closer to successfully defending his title by easing past Australia's Lleyton Hewitt 7-6 (9-7) 6-2 6-4 in just one hour 48 minutes, despite getting off to a relatively sluggish start by his standards.

He will now face Mario Ancic in the final eight after the Croat beat Spain's Fernando Verdasco in a five-set epic.

The real drama however, was to be found on Court Number One, where number two seed Nadal suffered an injury scare in his match against Russian Mikhail Youzhony.

The Spaniard required treatment from both his trainer and a doctor after slipping and spraining his right knee at the back of the court, though he quickly recovered to see off his opponent 6-3 6-1 6-1.

Speaking after his win, Nadal confirmed that the injury is "nothing important", though admitted that he was scared for a minute out on court.

"It was a very good result for me. I played a very good match and I am happy with the way I am playing and that I am in the quarter-finals," he added.

Meanwhile, Marat Safin survived a scare of his own against Stan Wawrinka after wobbling in the fourth set before finally booking his place in the quarter-finals with a 6-4 6-3 5-7 6-1 victory.
