An Irish man has been shot dead in southern Spain, police reports say.

Irish state broadcaster RTE has claimed that the man, who was originally from Dublin, was killed near the resort town of Estepona.

Reports claim that the man, in his 20s, was with another suspected Irish criminal at the time of the attack.

It is alleged that the vehicle in which they driving came under attack around 14:00 GMT today.

The Press Association news agency has quoted the department of foreign affairs in Dublin as saying that Irish diplomats in Spain had been made aware of the incident and had subsequently contacted local authorities.

No comment was made about claims that the victim was involved in the drugs trade.

An Irish police source told the Associated Press newsy agency that around five shots were fired at the victim's car.

The man was then shot twice in the head after exiting the vehicle.
