Coldplay's new album will carry a strong Hispanic theme as recording continues in Barcelona, according to a diary post from the band.

After visiting Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico earlier this year, frontman Chris Martin came up with idea of recording in Spain.

As well as the setting, the music and lyrics are now beginning to demonstrate the strong influences the band have been exposed to.

The group wrote: "The music and lyrics have begun to reflect to strengthening Hispanic theme.

"No maracas and castanets, but a vibrancy and colourfulness that owes much to the atmospheres of Buenos Aires and Barcelona."

Coldplay added: "The effect is subtle but important."

A reference to the album's producer, Brian Eno, was also included with the band saying the legendary figure enjoyed the group singing sessions.

"Singing is one of his great joys," the diary noted.

So far recording has taken place in churches around Barcelona as the follow-up to X&Y takes shape with a release date sometime in 2008 pencilled in.
