Midfielder Claude Makelele is due to sign for French club Paris Saint Germain today after being released by Chelsea on a free transfer.
The 35-year-old will move back to his homeland for the first time in a decade after he left Marseilles to join Spanish side Celta Vigo in 1998.
A big-money move to Real Madrid followed in 2000 and he spent three years at the Bernabeu before joining Chelsea in 2003.
Makelele had been largely a bit-part player in the 2007/08 season and due to his age he was only offered a short-term contract 12 months ago, prompting his move this summer.
Nevertheless, Chelsea announced the player's release by thanking the 71-cap international veteran for his contribution in the five years he spent at Stamford Bridge.
"Everyone at Chelsea FC would like to take this opportunity to thank Claude for the five years of service he has given to the club," a statement from the Blues read.
"Claude has been a key part of our trophy success during that time and we wish him well for the future."
During his Chelsea career, Makelele made a total of 217 appearances and is still held in high regard among fans and officials alike.
"He will always be welcomed back to Stamford Bridge in the future either as a player or as a friend of the club," the statement concluded.
