A car bomb has exploded in the northern Basque town of Getxo in Spain causing serious damage but resulting in no injuries, local police report.

The explosion took place outside a boat club after the separatist group Eta issued a warning.

The Associated Press news agency quotes a local police officer as claiming police found a van parked near the club and managed to cordon off the area and evacuate people from nearby houses before the blast took place.

Authorities are reported as saying the bomb exploded ten minutes before the time the anonymous caller gave to the police.

Serious damage was caused to the boat club but no one was injured in the blast.

"We express our absolute condemnation of this attack into Getxo and our total repugnance of all acts of violence," local mayor Imanol Landa told reporters.

Eta has regularly targeted the town of Getxo as it is the home of a number of Basque business leaders.
