Seve Ballesteros has been moved from the intensive care unit where he has been treated since October 14th after having surgery on a brain tumour.
The 51-year-old Spaniard lost consciousness at Madrid's international airport on 6 October, and was immediately rushed to hospital where he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
He undergone surgery on the tumour three times, the most recent of which took place on October 24th and was an operation to reduce pressure on his brain, caused by an oedema, and to remove remaining tumour tissues following two previous operations.
Today's development is the most positive news to date as the five-time major winner continues his rehabilitation.
"Severiano Ballesteros has left the intensive care unit and has now changed ward," a statement from Madrid's La Paz hospital said.
"Although this is good news, I would like to ask for everyone's patience - because the process is a lengthy one, and there is still a long way to go.
"He is continuing his recovery and is receiving visits."
Ballesteros won 87 titles during his career, including the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and the Masters in 1980 and 1983.
