Graham Ford has declared he is the man to take England to the top of world cricket.

Kent's director of cricket is interested in succeeding Peter Moores, who was sacked earlier this week.

The 48-year-old, who successfully coached South Africa between 1999 and 2001, believes he can work with ex-captain Kevin Pietersen.

"It is certainly something I would like to explore if offered. I would explore the situation and I would like to understand some of the dynamics of the set up and then make a decision," he told the BBC.

"Were I to be considered the ECB would have to do their homework and make sure the players are behind me.

"Kevin and I have had a really good relationship for a long time and I would like to think there's sufficient respect for him to work with me.

"I do believe Kevin is very proud of playing for England and would
like to see them become the number one cricketing nation in the world. He'd like to be a part of that."

Another name interested in the job is ex-Australia all-rounder Darren Lehmann.

The former Yorkshire star said: "I'm miles away from the specifics of what's happened in the last week, but it's certainly something which if offered I would explore."

Australians Tom Moody and Dav Whatmore, who have both coached Sri Lanka, and ex-India coach Greg Chappell have also been linked with the post.

The English and Wales Cricket Board is hopeful of appointing a permanent coach by the start of the English summer.
