John Emburey has revealed concerns over team selection and a frantic schedule forced him to reject the chance to become India coach.
Emburey decided to stay as Middlesex's director of cricket after being interviewed for the post in Delhi.
Kent director of cricket Graham Ford also snubbed the job, leaving India without a proper coach for next month's tour of England.
Emburey said being offered only a one-year contract was also a factor in his decision to turn down the chance to be Greg Chappell's successor.
"There were one or two things during the process that I wasn't wholly happy with," Emburey told Sky Sports News.
"Being involved in team selection was certainly one of them, but also the program over the next ten months is pretty intensive with not much rest in between.
"It came to transpire afterwards that it was only a one-year contract, so you really haven't got the opportunity or a chance of developing a side."
India have a bumper schedule this year with eight Tests against England and Australia along with 25 one-day internationals.
Rahul Dravid's side will also compete in the first Twenty20 World Cup in September in South Africa.
Emburey was a surprise candidate for the India job after disastrous spells as coach of Northamptonshire and Middlesex.
The 54-year-old added that he made the decision to stay at Middlesex when he came back England.
"I came into Middlesex on the Monday morning and spoke to the chief executive and said 'it was a great experience but I'm not going if they offer me the job'," he admitted.
"It was an hour after that that Graham Ford then turned down the job and then all of a sudden the phone started ringing again.
"I'd already made my commitment to Middlesex and that is a position I am going to stick with."
