The England and Wales Cricket Board has held an emergency meeting in a bid to resolve the ongoing dispute between captain Kevin Pietersen and coach Peter Moores.
The pair have been at loggerheads over a number of issues in recent weeks, with the quarrel spilling into the public domain amid a series of press reports this week over the growing discord.
And the ECB has sought to ease the tensions in the dressing room by calling both men to a meeting in order to thrash out their differences.
However, it is thought that if the issues cannot be resolved one or both of Moores and Pietersen could face the sack.
Pietersen was given the captaincy of both the Test and one-day sides between the second and third matches of the Test series against South Africa last summer, following the resignation of Michael Vaughan.
And despite a promising start - scoring a century and winning his first Test match against the Proteas and leading England to a shock 4-0 win in the ODI series his inexperience in leading a team began to show on the recent tour of India.
The latest problems, which include Pietersen speaking to national media about the difficulty he has had working with Moores, have also come at the worst possible time for the England management with just two weeks until the squad flies out to tour the West Indies and only a few months before the Ashes series against Australia this summer.
