Australia coach John Connolly wants rugby union officials to reduce the points awarded for drop-goals from three to one, the same as in rugby league.
Connolly's side were defeated by two late drop-goals by Francois Steyn in their 22-19 loss to the Springboks in the Tri-Nations last week.
But the Aussie coach says that has nothing to do with his call for the rules to be changed.
He explained: "I don't want this to come across as a case of sour grapes, but I believe drop-goals should be reduced to just one point.
"In saying that, I'm taking nothing away from South Africa's Francois Steyn, who showed incredible courage and skill to slot two late drop-goals to beat Australia at Newlands last weekend."
Australia have lost some high-profile games to drop goals over the years, most notably Jonny Wilkinson's extra-time effort in the World Cup four years ago.
"To lose in those circumstances was extremely tough. And it's worth stating that, over the years, I've been on the right side of the ledger more often than not," claimed Connolly.
The former Bath coach says the rule change would encourage more attacking play as it would put a premium on scoring tries.
"Rugby is about scoring tries and I can see a bigger focus on field goals if the laws are unchanged."
Australia face New Zealand in the Tri-Nations next weekend and Connolly admits he is in awe of the All Blacks ability to score at any time from anywhere on the field.
