US and EU ready to confront nuclear Iran

Tuesday, 10 Jun 2008 15:30
Uranium enrichment continues in Iran
The United States and European Union have threatened "additional measures" to impose their will against Iran's nuclear agenda.

A communiqué issued at the end of the joint US-EU summit in Slovenia pledges their ongoing commitment to hold Iran to the UN's security council resolutions on the issue.

These seek to end Iran's uranium enrichment by imposing punitive sanctions on Iran. Western powers believe the process could be contributing to the development of a nuclear arsenal.

"The strategic partnership between the United States and the EU is firmly anchored in common values and a determination to ensure global security, promote peace, protect human rights, and advance democracy," the joint statement said.

It reiterates commitment to existing sanctions, adding "we are ready to supplement these sanctions with additional measures" and voices concern about Iran's "continued support for terrorist organisations".

The move is the latest in an ongoing impasse between Iran and the rest of the world, which has been frustrated by president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's refusal to allow his domestic policies to be influenced by international players.

The UN's International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had reported Iran's refusal to abide by UN resolutions on its nuclear programme in a May report. It complained Tehran was not cooperating and warned it may be concealing high explosives testing and missile-related activities.

The US responded by demanding further information from Iran. Tehran threatened to suspend cooperation with the IAEA in response, continuing the deadlock which the US and EU now appear determined to break.End of story
