The Williams sisters, Venus and Serena, have been drawn into the same group at the season-ending WTA Tour Championships in Doha.
The tournament, which begins tomorrow, sees the top eight players in the world fight it out for the final trophy available in the women's professional tennis season.
Qualifiers are determined by their form this year, with the eight women to have picked up the most world ranking points during the season automatically qualifying.
The American sisters have been placed in the Maroon Group, alongside the Russian duo of Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina.
Two more Russians - demonstrating the dominance of the country during the 2008 season - are in the White Group, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva, alongside Serbia's world number one Jelena Jankovic and her countrywoman Ana Ivanovic.
The opening stage is a round robin event, with all players playing three matches. The top two from each group then advance to knockout semi-finals.
Justine Henin will not be defending the title she won in 2007 after retiring from professional tennis earlier this season.
