Serbian president dissolves parliament to call early elections

Thursday, 13 Mar 2008 11:53
Serbia is to hold elections in May
Serbian president Boris Tadic has dissolved parliament to call early legislative elections for May 11th.

The move follows the collapse of the country's ruling coalition over policy disagreements regarding ties with the European Union (EU) and Kosovo's declaration of independence.

"The elections are a democratic way for citizens to say how Serbia should develop in years to come," Mr Tadic said in a statement.

"In accordance with the constitution of Serbia… I signed the decree on dissolution of the parliament… and the decision to call the elections for May 11th."

Last week, prime minister Vojislav Kostunica announced that his Democratic Party of Serbia had failed to resolve differences with its pro-European coalition partners, Mr Tadic's Democratic party, regarding Serbia's integration into the EU and Kosovo independence.

"All parties want Serbia to join the EU, but the question is how – with or without Kosovo," Mr Kostunica said.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia on February 17th. The US and most EU states have recognised the new state but Serbia and Russia have said that they will never accept it.End of story
