Gordon Brown has said the European Union will send a "loud and clear" message to Serbia and Russia on the question of Kosovo's future.

The Balkan province is expected to achieve independence supported by the international community after a UN deadline for discussions on the issue expired on Monday.

Serbia and its international ally Russia remain bitterly opposed to such a move, but Mr Brown said the UK government's position rejected their arguments.

"The message is going out loud and clear to Serbia and Russia that this is the course we wish to take and I hope there will be all-party support for the action we are taking on this," Mr Brown said.
