Montenegro's president Filip Vujanovic has won re-election
Montenegro's president Filip Vujanovic has won re-election by a landslide.

Sunday's election was the country's first since gaining independence from Serbia two years ago.

Mr Vujanovic's rivals conceded defeat after election monitors announced that the president had won 51.4 per cent of the public vote.

The pro-Serbian candidate Andrija Mandic won 20.4 percent of the vote while Liberal candidate Nebojsa Medojevic won 15.7 per cent.

"Vujanovic's victory shows we are leading the right policies," Montenegro's prime minister Milo Djukanovic said.

The returning president told supporters in a speech: "I won for Montenegro and its future.

"I will be the president of all the people in Montenegro."

Mr Vujanovic, of the ruling Democratic Party of Socialists, said that his victory in Sunday's election proved that "a majority of Montenegrins support our policies".

Whilst the official final results are not expected until Tuesday, the independent Centre for Monitoring claimed that turnout for the election was 69 per cent, 22 per cent higher than when Mr Vujanovic, 53, won his first term in 2003.

Montenegro split from Serbia after declaring independence in May 2006. End of story
