An armed attack has taken place at the house of the prime minister of Kosovo, Hashim Thaci, in the capital city of the newly independent state.

Security forces at Mr Thaci's home said they had fired on intruders who forced their way onto the premises. Shots were exchanged but the attackers managed to escape.

Police said one of the injured has been wounded in the exchange of fire. Mr Thaci was not at home at the time but his wife and son were in the house during the attack. No injuries have been reported on the part of security staff or the prime minister's family.

Deputy prime minister Hajredin Kuci said: "The fact that someone has tried to hurt the prime minister and his family for whatever reason is not only criminal, it goes beyond any political hatred or impatience."

The ethnic Albanian population of Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February this year. The move for independence has not been accepted by Serbia nor regional power Russia.

Police are yet to release information about the identity of the attackers and the motives behind the attack.
