Serena Williams has been knocked out of the French Open in the quarter-finals by seventh seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The Russia eventually won 7-6 (7-3) 5-7 7-5 after missing numerous opportunities to close out the game.
Williams fought back after losing the set and seeing Kuznetsova waste the opportunity to serve for the match in the second, but was eventually defeated in the third.
At one point she had led 3-1 in the final set but appeared to tire and was broken in the last game to bring to an end her quest to win a third consecutive major championship.
Williams, the second seed, had previously won 18 consecutive Grand Slam games and had been bidding for her 11th major title.
Kuznetsova will now face double specialist Samantha Stosur in the semi-final after the Australian overcame Sorana Cirstea 6-1 6-3.
