The Oscar-winning actor Paul Scofield has died at the age of 86 it has been announced.Scofield won the 1967 Oscar for best actor for his performance as Sir Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons.He was later nominated for best supporting actor in 1995 for Quiz Show.His agent Rosalind Chatto confirmed today that Scofield had died in a hospital near his Suffolk home on Wednesday."He had leukaemia and had not been well for some time," she said.Scofield was born in 1922 in Sussex and began his stage career in 1940, later becoming famous for his Shakespearean roles.He was described as having a distinctive voice and delivery and was appointed a CBE in 1956 after his performance in Peter Brooks' Hamlet in Moscow.The actor leaves two children and his wife, the actress Joy Parker.
