Second seed Andy Murray produced a dogged display of counter-attacking tennis to make it into the semi-finals of the St Petersburg Open.
The British number one beat highly-rated Russian Dmitry Tursanov in three sets, 3-6 7-6 6-4.
Despite the positive result, the 20-year-old Scot looked shaky at times and found himself on the back foot throughout.
But his battling spirit shone through in droves as he saved 12 of 14 break points in the match without losing his serve once in the second and third sets.
Murray, who plays 2004 St Petersburg champion Mikhail Youzhny in the last-four, is hoping to pick up maximum points from the penultimate tournament of his season in Russia.
He has his sights set on an unlikely place at the end-of-season Masters Cup in Shanghai.
But the world number 17 will need to win the tournament to stand a realistic chance of taking one of the eight places up for grabs, which go to the players with the most ranking points from this calendar year.
Murray missed three months of the season - including two grand slam tournaments, the French Open and Wimbledon - because of a wrist injury, which means he has struggled to keep pace with the top ten.
Before the injury he was ranked ninth in the world but has only just begun to rediscover his best form since experiencing problems with the joint.
