Japan has renewed its sanctions against North Korea in response to what it claims was a launch of a missile over its territory last Sunday.
The unilateral sanctions have been in place since 2006 and in addition to extending their duration; Japan has also reduced the cap for remittances to North Korea which requires government disclosure.
Speaking at a news conference, chief cabinet secretary Takeo Kawamura said: "We have not seen a sincere response from North Korea on the issues of abductions, nuclear programs and missiles.
"We decided that additional measures were also needed, taking into consideration the overall situation after the missile launch," he added.
Japan is also pushing for a stern response to North Korea at the United Nations security council. However, China and Russia are not in favour of such a move due to disagreements over the seriousness of the North Korean move.
On Sunday, North Korea said it launched a communications satellite into space to transmit patriotic songs. Japan and the US feared that the move was a guise to test the capability of the state's missiles.
