Bush in key talks with China over economy

Saturday, 22 Nov 2008 16:54
The APEC summit is the US president's last official visit abroad
US president George Bush has met Chinese leader Hu Jintao at the APEC summit of Asian-Pacific countries.

Mr Bush is expected to discuss ways to address the turmoil in the world's financial markets with other leaders of the 21-member organisation during the meeting in Lima.

A list of core principles to manage the economic crisis was agreed at a meeting of the world's 20 most industrialised nations last week and the US president hopes to get more countries to sign up to the plan.

A spokeswoman for the White House press office said the US head of state will also lobby for greater efforts to push forward North Korea's planned nuclear disarmament during meetings with the heads of state of Russia, Japan and South Korea.

In a key meeting, Russia's president Dmitry Medvedev is also set to hold discussions with Mr Bush. Ties between the two countries have been fraught over the last few months with threats being exchanged over the deployment of a US defence shield in Eastern European countries bordering Russia.

Russia has previously warned of pointing missiles back at Poland, where the US defence shield will be placed, in response to the measures.

The APEC summit is Mr Bush's last official foreign trip as head of state.
